Over the Moon over Moon Cakes!

This Mid-Autumn Festival saw me tasting mooncakes in 3 countries besides those in Malaysia. I was away in Vietnam, China and Thailand within a month's period.

VIETNAM
Bought Kinh Do company's mooncake in Thai Nguyen city and gobbled them up at our homestay house in Ba Be Lake of Bac Kan province.

Scans from Kinh Do's mooncake catalogue. Prices in Vietnamese Dong.

Try translating the catalogue ? Many Vietnamese words are phonetically similar to Chinese;
eg Lap Xuong = Lap Cheong = Sausage, Dau Xanh = Tau Sa = Red Bean
Try this online dictionary http://vdict.com/

The article on the culture of giving mooncakes in Vietnam as published in The Star daily.

CHINA
Stopped over in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Province and managed to sample some mooncakes. Below are the pages from the mooncake catalogue.

THAILAND
Grabbed this mooncake in Surat Thani, before hopping on the ferry to Samui island. Mooncake came from Bangkok.

Cabbages & Condoms, Wiang Pa Pao, Chiang Rai

Seriously... there's nothing hanky-panky about Cabbages & Condoms, even though the name may suggest otherwise...

It's a restaurant chain operated by PDA (Population and Community Development Association of Thailand), an NGO whose main objective is to promote family planning in Thailand, besides eradication of poverty. The chairman and founder, Mechai Viravaidya, contends that “birth control should be as accessible and as easy to buy as vegetables in the market!” Hence the name “Cabbages & Condoms.”

The main outlet in Bangkok has displays of various condoms, informational yet humourous posters regarding contraception and related souvenirs for sale. After dining there, instead of being given after-dinner mints, you are given packets of condoms. There are other outlets located in various parts of Thailand.

The photos below are of the Wiang Pa Pao outlet (in Chiang Rai), located about halfway between Chiang Mai city and Chiang Rai city. Besides a restaurant, it has accommodation available for rental in form of cottages and a shop selling souvenirs & local food products. Our tour groups stopped here for lunch and coffee break.

You will like their slogan, "Our food is guaranteed not to cause pregnancy"

For more info, visit http://www.pda.or.th/restaurant/

Really eye-catching signage here....

... a intentional pun at the Golden Triangle which is not too far away...

Accommodation available....

Amazing Thailand Festival Aug 14-16 2009 (including recipes for Thai Desserts... yummy!)

The following are photos taken at the Amazing Thailand Festival, held Aug 14-16, 2009 at Mid-Valley Exhibition Center, Kuala Lumpur. I was there as one of the invited travel agents to promote Thailand tourism at Tourism Authority of Thailand's booth. Lots of good fun & good stuff at the Festival. Scroll down and try out the Thai Dessert recipes I posted.....

Synonymous with Chiang Mai, a dazzling display of paper umbrellas greets visitors at the entrance. A photography exhibition at a neighbouring exhibition hall, going on at the same time, sent hordes of photographers crowding around this display.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) booth, where Thai tourism officials and Malaysian travel agents were stationed.

TAT's booth had a live demonstration of making Thai desserts. The end results are captivating to both taste buds and to the eyes.

Fruit carving. (... that looks like a watermelon)

At one stage, the dessert makers were wearing Western influenced fashion that was popular during King Chulalongkorn's time (end 19th century, going into 20th century).

3. Pour the yolk through a narrow funnel which is placed over the pot of syrup so that the yolk will become golden threads in the syrup.

4. Use a long pointed piece of wood to stir the golden threads in the syrup until they become smooth. Then remove them from heat and wrap them around themselves so that they form the shape of a rectangle.

Aum brings 'Oomph!' to shampoo ad...

We have been seeing advertisements of FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) products like shampoos, soaps, etc. on our Malaysian TV featuring well-known foreign celebrities. We have seen John Abraham and Rain for All Clear Men's Shampoo, Kareena Kapoor for Head & Shoulders, Priyanka Chopra for Lux, Marian Rivera (she's a popular actress in the Philippines) for Sunsilk, etc.

I have seen a few advertisements for shampoos, soaps or beauty creams featuring Thai models (at least in my opinion they look like they are from Thailand). However, I wasn't able to pinpoint if the Thai models were celebrities in Thailand ... just couldn't match what I have in my, admittedly, not too up-to-date nor complete memory bank of Thai celebrities.

However, the recently introduced Sunsilk Shampoo advertisement now making its rounds on Malaysian TV screens was a pleasant surprise. Finally someone Thai I can recognize. She's none other than the beautiful and sexy Patcharapa Chaichuea, nicknamed 'Aum'. Born on 5th December 1978, Aum is a very popular actress and model in Thailand, featuring in Thai TV dramas since 1997 and has appeared in countless Thai fashion & ladies magazines.

The guys may take note that she has been voted FHM (Thailand Edition) Most
Sexiest Woman for 3 consecutive years: 2003, 2004 & 2005.....

By the way, take a look at the fine print on your shampoo and beauty cream bottles. If they were made in Thailand, chances are they came from either:
a) Colgate-Palmolive (contract manufacturer S&J International Enterprises Public Company Limited), 600/4 Moo 11, Sukaphiban 8 Road, Nongkharm, Sriracha, Chonburi
b) Unilever Thai Holdings Limited, 63 Mu 4, Lardkrabang Industrial Estate, Chalongkrung Rd., Bangkok
c) Procter & Gamble Manufacturing (Thailand) Ltd, 112 Moo 5, Wellgrow Industrial Estate, Bangna-Trad Rd., Bang Samak, Bang Pakong, Chachoengsao
d) Johnson & Johnson (Thailand) Limited, 106 Moo 4, Latkrabang Industrial Estate, Bangkok
